The peak hiker season for Tehachapi is only four months away. We continue to work on the renovations. We learned a lot in 2018.

The initial focus was to establish a mail drop. I thought that would be easy. For the most part, it was simple and easy to do.

Things will improve in 2019. By the time we reach the centennial anniversary of the building the renovations will be completed. The thought was that we would help hikers during the peak season and occasionally during the fall months. Turns out, last year we interact with hikers from March until July then again from September until November. During the other months, we help provide information and meet with people to try to improve our services.

Today I’ve helped take four hikers back out to the trail.  I would imagine that over the last seven days, ten hikers have come into Tehachapi and spend about one day here before heading back out to the PCT.

The interior of Wits’ End is undergoing a major renovation.  We are still accepting packages at the following address:

Hiker Name with ETA
1121 W Valley Blvd Ste I-376

Currently we are not able to provide wi-fi or recharging.  That will be available in April 2019.  Hikers, please contact us if you need assistance in the Tehachapi area.

Slowing down

Things are slowing down here.  No packages coming in, not many hikers here before lunch, and less than 10 packages waiting to be picked up.

Busy but smoothly going forward

True, things are pretty busy most afternoons.  But it is going smoothly so far.  There is a pace and rhythm to it all.  Life is about balance for me.  Most days I do pretty well at it.  Some days are not very balanced.

Think of a better way

Today was the first busy day with hikers. The phone system works well for hikers but not as well for trail angels. I hope to get a smoother process in place for trail angels.

Packages are beginning to arrive. Vincent brought wooden benches yesterday. Table and other furniture pieces are now in place. Starting Sunday, we will be open daily from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM. This schedule will be until the 4th of July holiday.

Please understand that David and I will not and have not charged anyone at anytime for the services we provide at Wits’ End. We do not charge for packages sent or received here. We do not charge for using our WiFi. We do not charge for coordinating rides. We are not affiliated with any religion. We are not promoting anyone or anything political.

Open House

There will be an open house on April 28, 2018 at 115 S Mojave St in Tehachapi, CA.  Any local trail angel for the PCT that would like more information about the maildrop should stop by between the hours of 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM.  If you want more information or details, please use the contact us section.
